Racial prejudice on boat

Review of Steamboat Natchez Jazz Cruise with Optional Dinner Buffet

  • George USA Nov 23 2017 12:37pm

My family and I did not have a good experience. We were subjected to racial prejudice. After dinner, my family together with a white family of five that sat next to us were moved to an alternate side of the boat. About an hour later the same white family went and helped themselves to a second round of buffet and desserts. The wait staff (mainly black staff) happily served them. Fifteen minutes later I went and asked the same wait staff if I could have a bowl of soup. They gave it to me. Even before I got to my seat, an Asian wait staff who had been standing by the buffet tables and did nothing as the white family served themselves pursued me and embarrassingly admonished me for taking the soup. The embarrassment didn't end there - she went ahead to retrieve the soup bowl. I asked her if I could pay for it. She declined. She disappeared into the kitchen. When she re-emerged, I accused her of prejudicial behavior. She then proceeded to politely talk to the white family and pretended to retrieve their already empty plates. She never touched the dessert bowls and allowed the family to eat their dessert. I have since seen other reviews on yelp and other forums that depict racial prejudice on this steamboat. My family and I have vowed to NEVER patronize this boat again.

We are so terribly sorry to hear about your experience and have contacted the Steamboat Natchez so that they can address the issues immediately. We typically receive great reviews for this excursion, so to hear this type of feedback is uncommon as well as troubling. I will be contacting you directly regarding their response, but please let me know if there is anything else we can do in the meantime. Kind regards, TripShock! Guest Service Manager

The band was great. The boat was a smooth ride but the food was horrible

    Okay

The Rain hinder the overall trip; however, the cruise is to crowded. The tour guide indicate the boat holds 1200 people but it doesn’t mean comfortably. The dinner was okay but roast beef and turkey I don’t consider NOLA food. Where was the catfish, shrimp and crawfish etitofee. As my rating indicates everything was fine nothing out of the ordinary.

    Great food

The food was great. However, when the captain told the history of the Mississippi River, everything was on the left side of the boat. When they turn the boat, they should repeat the history so the right side of the boat can see what he was talking about. Otherwise great experience.

Much of the visitor related notations are to the left side of the boat on the way downriver. The Jazz band plays during that second half. We have tried intermingling music with commentary but that seems to miss points. If anyone would like, we have an overview of the cruise points on board with our hosts - and in other languages than English.

    Better Food

The music was awesome and the drinks were good but the food could use a little help. The same size salad at a table of 4 as a table of 2. Hummm? An option to dine 1st or late would be nice. Dessert was par at best.

Your server should have been able to provide additional salad for your table. When booking our guests can select the earlier or later seating, depending on availability. We regret that you were unable to do so.

    Dinner on the Natchez

I enjoyed the evening cruise on the Natchez, but have to report the meal served just wasn’t up to my expectations given the price paid.

Our meal menu is posted but perhaps you did not have a chance to check and make sure it would be to your taste. We don't like guests to be disappointed. The ticket includes the cruise, engine room visit, entertainment, and the buffet. Hope that helps explain.

    Family Affair

Tripshock saved us a huge expense while on a quick family trip. The boat was a nice event-filled with family and significant others. It was clean and tidy. We did venture out on a not so promising day. This was no fault to the crew or administrators. It was cold and wet and the typical passengers that were not dining could not be accomadated. We had two teenagers that were NOT pleased. I did purchase a family excursion with dinner but when my voucher was printed dinner was not added. That did upset me. However, we chose to take advantage due to the opportunity. The hard part was that there were many seats available during the dinner period of the cruise that were either not sold or multiple no shows. We saw the crew preparing take home dishes that were untouched while we were... read more

Ms.Devore, we researched your review to locate how we could have misprinted your tickets. It appears that the reservation sent to us from Tripshock showed a purchase for only the cruise portion and not the meals. You might want to check with them if you believe that you did not receive what was paid for that evening. I am not sure if you asked about purchasing a meal on board - and if there was that availability on board we would certainly have accommodated your family. We appreciate that selected us and apologize for any difficulties that it caused your or your family.
